Recently completed on the Ides of March 2026
This sculpture, carved in marble from from the Chillagoe mines in Queensland, took almost a year to create and is now complete. It is a collage of stylistic elements. I had no intention of creating a work that mimics one particular look or era. The sculpture is the product of direct carving meaning that I did not use a clay model to work from.
The intellectual stamina needed when working on a human head is enormous. Every sculptor that engages with this subject, from the great Bernini to Youtubers, describe that as being so.
Learning how to carve the human head from a block of stone is an ongoing fascination. Every small achievement and each technical discovery is a personal triumph.
